Methodist North Hospital Hosts Free 2nd Annual Battle for Men’s Health Event Featuring Football, Food and Health Screenings
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Methodist North Hospital welcomes men from around the community to join healthcare providers and local vendors for a free night of food, football and networking at the Junior League of Memphis September 24 from 5-9 p.m.
The event offers men a safe, judgement-free zone to learn, ask questions and build community while enjoying tailgate-style food, football on a big screen, participate in interactive breakout sessions with healthcare providers and receive free health screenings.
President of Methodist North Hospital Dr. Florence Jones said this event aims to encourage men to make their health a priority.
"The Battle for Men's Health event is an exciting initiative that Methodist North Hospital is proud to sponsor in our continued effort to reach men in ways that are casual, comfortable and engaging. This event is an opportunity to have frank conversations with skilled providers and address health issues that impact men,” Dr. Jones said.
“Men are less likely to seek preventive care which often results in a delayed diagnosis and poorer health outcomes. Our goal is to help create healthy communities and this event aims to kickstart that by providing men with a great entry point to learn and explore the benefits of preventative care," she added.
Dr. Balaji Krishnaiah, a neurologist and Medical Director of the Methodist Stroke Program, and one of the providers who will be participating in the event, said being out in the community and giving men the opportunity to have important conversations is a useful tool for providers.
“As physicians, we often emphasize the importance of taking care of ourselves and staying on top of routine health screenings. Yet for many men, there are still real barriers to seeking preventive care, whether it is stigma around going to the doctor, uncertainty about the value of routine checkups, or simply not knowing where to start,” Krishnaiah said.
“That is what makes the upcoming Battle for Men’s Health event so important. It lowers the barriers and meets men where they are— in a comfortable, familiar setting. Men can come watch the football game, connect with others, and have informal conversations with healthcare providers who can help them take those important first steps toward better health,” Krishnaiah said. “Sometimes improving men’s health starts with simply making it easier to have the conversation.”
Several healthcare providers will be in attendance to lead 25-minute breakout sessions and offer opportunities for men to ask questions privately about topics such as urinary, sexual, brain, mental and cardiovascular health.
Free health screenings will be offered for men in attendance and resources will be available to learn about preventative healthcare options.
Whether it’s the food, football or networking, the hope for this event is that men will leave confident and encouraged to make their health a priority and to take preventative care seriously.
