Cardiac Treatments Available

We offer a wide range of treatment options for many cardiac conditions. Available treatments include:

  • Ablation: Cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib) and other heart rhythm problems. Methodist Le Bonheur is the first health system in Tennessee to offer an advanced tool called the DiamondTemp ablation system for enhanced outcomes. This system allows the surgeon to quickly assess the effectiveness of the ablation using an advanced temperature mechanism.
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG): This procedure treats blockages or narrowing in coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease (CAD) and restores blood flow to the heart. Several options are available for CABG, including open-heart surgeries as well as minimally invasive procedures. Your doctor will help determine which is the best option for you.
  • Heart valve surgery: If you have heart valve disease, this type of surgery can repair damaged or diseased valves. While in the past, this type of procedure was only performed as open-heart surgery, Methodist Le Bonheur offers minimally invasive approaches for easier recovery and shorter hospital stays.
  • Mitral valve repair or replacement: This type of minimally invasive heart valve surgery is performed on the mitral valve, the valve found between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. When this valve becomes hardened or too loose, blood no longer flows properly. Mitral valve repair or mitral valve replacement allows the surgeon to restore proper blood flow.
  • Pulsed field ablation: Methodist Le Bonheur was the first healthcare system in Tennessee—and one of the first 25 sites nationwide—to offer Medtronic PulseSelect Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) as a treatment for atrial fibrillation. PFA uses electrical pulses to target the part of the heart that causes it to beat too fast or too slow. It only takes minutes to perform PFA, which significantly decreases the amount of time patients are under anesthesia.
  • Renal denervation: If you have high blood pressure that doesn’t respond to medications, renal denervation at Methodist Le Bonheur may be the solution. During this minimally invasive procedure, the doctor will insert a catheter into the femoral artery in your groin and maneuver it to the renal arteries in your kidneys. The doctor will deliver radiofrequency pulses to heat the renal nerves—without damaging the renal arteries. After renal denervation, the nerves produce less activity, which lowers blood pressure.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): This innovative procedure treats aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the heart's aortic valve opening. The minimally invasive TAVR procedure can often be used to replace damaged heart valves instead of traditional open-heart surgery, making the treatment available to patients who might otherwise not be candidates for surgery.
  • WATCHMAN device: For people with AFib that is not caused by a heart valve problem, the WATCHMAN FLX implant can be an option to help prevent stroke, which is a risk for AFib patients. The device closes off a part of the heart where blood clots often form, making it possible for some AFib patients to no longer need blood-thinning medication.

We offer same-day discharge for many heart procedures, including TAVR, mitral valve replacement and repair, and WATCHMAN.
