Selecting a Heart Care Specialist

"Cardiology" is a broad specialty that includes diagnosing, treating and preventing heart-related diseases. In the field of cardiology, there are many different subspecialties - and different types of cardiologists who provide care within each. Depending on the specific heart condition you have, you may be seen by any of these providers:

General cardiologists diagnose and treat a wide range of heart-related health issues. A general cardiologist may refer you to a specialist if additional care is needed.

Cardio-oncologists have specialized training in the unique heart health needs of those who have been or are being treated for cancer. Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can negatively impact heart health, making careful monitoring important.

Electrophysiologists diagnose and treat conditions that cause an abnormal heart rhythm, such as a heart that beats too fast, too slow or irregularly.

Heart failure specialists provide diagnosis and ongoing care for heart failure when the heart can’t pump blood efficiently.

Heart surgeons are specialty-trained in advanced procedures to treat conditions affecting the heart, heart valves and blood vessels around the heart. These specialists often have expertise in procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting or mitral valve repair.

Interventional cardiologists use catheter-based procedures to diagnose and treat problems related to the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease.
