Surgeons at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute experienced a 14% increase in the number of liver transplants from 2007 to 2008. They performed 120 liver transplants last year compared to 106 liver transplants in 2007.
“We work diligently to grow our liver transplant program so that we can save lives.” said James Eason, M.D., medical director for the Transplant Institute. “We have taken several steps to enable us to perform additional liver transplants such as extending our educational outreach programs and adding to our transplant team so we have the personnel ready to perform a transplant when a liver becomes available.”
Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute focuses on liver, kidney, pancreas, and kidney/pancreas transplants and is home to one of the 12 largest liver transplant programs in the country. The transplant institute consists of a state-of-the-art facility featuring two dedicated transplant operating rooms, a transplant clinic with telemedicine capabilities, and an off-site diagnostic center with a dedicated transplant area.
