Mississippi Couple Delivers Baby in Parking Lot of Germantown Hospital

Misty and Jeremy Sartain’s only worry as they headed out the door of their Lake Cormorant, Mississippi, home to deliver their baby at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, was rush hour traffic. Little did they know their worries were about to escalate.

“I thought we had plenty of time,” said Misty. “We were concerned about the traffic because it was morning rush hour.”

When the couple turned on to Riverdale from Holmes, Misty knew the baby was coming sooner than they anticipated. “I told my husband we needed to get there now and he said don’t push.”

Jeremy quickly and safely navigated the car to the hospital and ran into the nearest entrance which happened to be the operating room door where Bennett Bicknell, M.D., an anesthetist with Medical Anesthesia Group, was stationed that morning. Dr. Bicknell ran out of the hospital with Jeremy to the Sartain’s car where Misty had already given birth to her son. This was her third child and she was prepared. “It’s amazing how mother nature and instinct kicks in,” explained Misty. “I wiped his face and patted him on his back until he started to breathe.”

“It was not my typical day,” explained Dr. Bicknell. “Usually I’m administering and monitoring anesthesia, but on this occasion I was first on the scene of a newly born baby.”

Misty had been looking forward to delivering at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital because she had received such good care before. “I felt very safe, especially when Dr. Bicknell came out. He put me at ease. There was someone beside me.”

Other staff from the OR and maternity came out with a stretcher and got Misty out of the car and whisked her away to labor and delivery. “It doesn’t seem like it happened to me,” said Misty. “The medical staff adjusted to the situation. They didn’t miss their rhythm.”

Dr. Bicknell stopped by a little later that day to check on mom and baby who were doing well. The family is now back home in Lake Cormorant.
