Patients come from across America to receive a liver transplant at the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2011, our program was ranked the 4th largest liver transplant program in the country for volume and outcomes.

A liver transplant is a surgical procedure performed to replace a diseased liver with a healthy liver from a deceased donor. In 2009, Apple CEO Steve Jobs received a liver transplant at the Transplant Institute.

A liver transplant is recommended for individuals who have serious liver dysfunction and will not be able to live without having the liver replaced. Our surgeons perform life-saving liver transplants for patients with the following diseases:

  • Cirrhosis
  • Acute hepatic necrosis
  • Biliary atresia
  • Metabolic disease
  • Liver cancers
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Liver damage from overdose of medications toxic to the liver
